FY 09-10 Budget approved by Exec Committee

Quick Education Committee budget update : the $5500 proposed budget has been cut to $3500 for the FY 09-10 which will have bearing on the projects that we will be able to support. This may change after next week's City of LA- Budget and Finance meeting where it is possible that the Neighborhood Council budget is cut from $45,000/year to $11,500/year. Please attend next week's 5/13 6pm meeting to help decide where this money will go if you would like it spent somewhere in particular. The meeting's location has not been finalized but will likely be at Arda's cafe on 6th/Olive.

IMPORTANT: The city is considering slashing our budget to $11,500 because not all Neighborhood Councils are using their budget effectively-- but we are! Please TAKE ACTION to help prevent the city from cutting our budget by 80% by spending 10-20 minutes doing the following:
1- Use the contact info list below to email your city council member
2- Send your thoughts on this topic to the mayor mayor@lacity.org
3- Send your thoughts on this topic to the budget and finance committee

Below you will find the key parts of last night's discussion around the budget

DLANC EDUCATION COMMITTEE BUDGET DISCUSSION 04.28.09

PROJECTS IN THE WORKS:

1. Gather information on schools and related programs

2. Partnered small projects with Central City Outreach Center

3. Developing work with 9th Street Elementary to bolster their own efforts

The mission of the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Education Committee is to empower and uplift community members of all ages by facilitating opportunities to both teach and learn from each other.

- Collective and Personal Responsibility—We share responsibility for each other, just as we are responsible for our selves. We respect one another unconditionally. The strength of our community depends on the tenacity and cohesiveness of its people. We know it is up to us to make it happen and we know we need to do what it takes.

- Excellence and Value—We strive for achieving excellence in all we do and aim to add identifiable value to the lives of those around us.

- Possibility—We are optimistic in our approach of known and unknown challenges.

- Voice—We embrace the opinions of one another and take ownership over ensuring that the wide variety of voices of our community are heard and if not they are sought out.

PROJECTS MAIN FOCUS: EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS

- Opportunities for (k-12) students living on skid row

- Opportunities for (k-8) students living in/near downtown

RATIONALE: Per the discussion at our outreach meeting we have found that the needs of the (k-12, but particularly the k-8) children living in/near downtown are not being met. Given our previously tackled projects have had an adult education and empowerment focus, we are looking to engage a new pocket of our community. At the same time we know that if we impact younger members of our community at an earlier time, they are more likely to be increasingly empowered later. We will of course maintain our legacy projects, but are excited to expand on our impact overall.
